Our program begins by taking a look at the incidence and prevalence of abuse in the lives of women and children, particularly childhood sexual abuse, sexual violence and woman abuse.
We also begin thinking about our own professional practices working with women survivors and examining the major health and social service crisis that abuse presents in our communities and around the world.
A) Complete questions 1-5 in your student manual
B) As health and social service professionals, many of us have fairly strong beliefs about what women need in order to ensure the best possible outcome for themselves and their babies.
Please create a list of some of the emotional, physical and mental/spiritual ingredients essential for women to acquire optimum health and well-being during: pregnancy, labour and birth, and postpartum.
Please keep this list for future reference.
C) What are the rates of abuse against women and children in your community? Are their specific populations that are at an increased risk? Why?
D) Why do you think it is difficult to get accurate statistics for rates of childhood sexual abuse, sexual violence and woman abuse?
